One of the greatest threats to your eyes is invisible – UV (ultraviolet) radiation from the sun. Like your skin, your eyes never recover from UV exposure. Exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. UV exposure, wind and dust can also cause pterygia – benign growths on the eye’s surface; and can damage the cornea. More obvious dangers can be found in ordinary activities such as gardening, housework, fishing and paintball; and glitter make-up can cause corneal abrasions in contact lens wearers! Wear protective eye wear such as goggles and use some common sense where there is a possibility of eye injury or even blindness. Select sunglasses that block UV rays and that wrap all the way round to your temples. In addition, wear a broad-rimmed hat to protect your eyes. Remember, the sun’s UV rays can pass through thin clouds. If you get sand or small debris into the eye do not rub. Use eyewash to flush the eye out and if the debris remains see a doctor. Be sensible, you only have one pair of eyes. If you feel we have left out important info or you would like to add to this article, please contact us:
